DELANO SMITH - UK EXCLUSIVE

Thursday, April 22, 2010 0 comments

As we move towards the summer, we take things on a more deep and groovy vibe by bringing you one of Detroit's unsung stars: Delano Smith.

Inspired and mentored by the motor city's answer to Larry Levan - the late great Ken Collier, Delano began to perfect the art of DJing in the late 70's playing disco in various underground clubs around the city. Then, in the early 80's a new sound emanating from further down the Interstate 94 in Chicago began to catch Smith's attention. That sound was house music. Delano was there throughout the birth of Detroit's own house music scene and held residencies at some of it's early clubs before bowing out of the arena to pursue a career in the computer industry just as the Music Institute opened it's doors in 1987.

Then, almost a decade later in the mid nineties, the house bug bit again and the inescapable lure of a life in music drew Delano towards two old friends, Mike Clarke and Norm Talley, with whom he set up the now infamous Beat Down Sounds crew. Together they were responsible for some legendary parties and were also chief contributors to the highly respected Detroit Beatdown compilation released on London based label Third Ear Recordings. It was around this time that Delano started his own Mixmode imprint with Tony Foster and began to increase his production output with subsequent releases on Still Music, Sushitech, Third Ear and Undertones, all of which have received widespread critical praise.

Having been behind the wheels for more than 30 years, Delano's DJ sets are smooth and effortless - encompassing deep sounds, filled with funk and as you would expect from one of Motown's children, drenched in soul. Do not miss this rare EXCLUSIVE UK gig and Manchester debut of a true underground hero.

KENNY LARKIN

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 0 comments

For our Easter special we are proud to present one of Detroit’s elite techno producer and DJs: Kenny Larkin.

Kenny began his musical journey in 1990, fresh from serving 2 years in the U.S. Air Force. By visiting such glorious clubs as The Music Institute and The Shelter he met all the key players in the Detroit scene at the time, including a certain Richie Hawtin who put out Kenny’s first release on his Plus 8 label.

Then after a number of releases under his various monikers of Dark Comedy, Pod, and Yennek and on other such seminal labels as Derrick May’s Transmat and his own Art Of Dance, Kenny released his debut artist album “Azimuth” on Warp in 1994. It was extremely well received by the music press and was hailed by some as one of the most original and innovative techno albums to date.

Since “Azimuth” Kenny has released a further 2 artist albums under his Dark Comedy alias and 3 under his own name, including “Keys Strings and Tambourines” in 2008 which again received widespread critical acclaim, as well as multiple EPs on some of the world’s most respected labels.

As a DJ, Kenny’s skills are second to none and his sets (much like his productions) take in influences from all over the musical spectrum – expect to hear the finest house and techno sounds all infused with elements of funk, soul, jazz and blues and mixed to perfection in a fluid and rolling style that you should expect from one of the motor city’s leading lights.

£10 advance tickets.

Samuel L Session, our guest for February first exploded onto the scene in 1999 with a string of releases that were played by massive names like Jeff Mills and Derrick May. Since then he has continued to put out records of such quality that that he has been asked to remix a range of artists, from Ben Sims and Kevin Saunderson to Audio Soul Project and Jerome Sydenham.

The past couple of years have seen his own tracks remixed by Steve Rachmad, Joris Voorn and Deetron and have culminated in his debut artist album "The Man With The Case" which was one of the best techno albums of 2009, played by anyone from Francois K to Laurent Garnier and previous Content guest Rolando.

His skills don't end in the studio though. Having been a DJ for over 20 years, Samuel is one of the best techno DJ's you are likely to hear, with a tight and fluid style that encompasses more housey grooves, modern minimal stylings, a touch of tribal techno and a big not towards Detroit's deeper more atmospheric sound.

02.10.09 - DJ ROLANDO (DETROIT)

Content @ The Roadhouse presents...

DJ ROLANDO
02.10.09
11pm - 3am

Although world renowned for his epic cross over success with “Knights of the Jaguar,” DJ Rolando is primarily a DJ and producer of the finest underground house and techno you are ever likely to hear emanating from the Motor City. Being a former member of the legendary Underground Resistance crew and one of the founder members of Los Hermanos you can guarantee that one of Rolando’s DJ sets will showcase all that is good about the sounds of Detroit, from tight, techy grooves all the way through to deep melodic sounds.Born in the 1970’s in southwest Detroit, he grew up in the Hispanic district heavily influenced by his cultural latin rhythms and percussion. Encouraged from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the community. It was later when he heard Jeff Mills as “The Wizard” that he discovered the innovative sounds of techno. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to “Mad” Mike Banks and promptly became a member of the enigmatic Underground Resistance crew.

About Rolando...
Soon his first opportunity came to cross the Atlantic and his speedy proficiency on the turntables wowed audiences worldwide earning him respect and notoriety within the industry as a whole. ‘Knights of The Jaguar’ although not Rolando’s first release on UR turned perceptions of techno on their head, breaking into other genres of dance music and becoming a classic in the boxes of DJs such as Tenaglia, Morillo, Oakenfold and Giles Peterson. With the ensuing battle against corporate goliath’s Sony - the battle was morally won by sheer determination of the small independent label and the steadfast support of fans worlwide.

In more recent times, he and Gerald Mitchell created the label ‘Los Hermanos’ (‘The Brothers’ in Spanish) - the sound continuing on the themes and tones set in place by his own “Knights of The Jaguar”. As of January 2005, citing creative differences and a chance to progress, Rolando left both Underground Resistance and the Los Hermanos project.

For our second party, we shift focus to one of Germany’s upcoming talents,Deep Vibes label boss: Sascha Dive. As well as holding down a residency at Berlin’s infamous TAPE nightclub, Sascha has released music on some of the most forwardthinking labels in Europe and the list of artists he’s remixed and been remixed by reads like a who’s who of modern house music. With a deep, rolling sound, Sascha’s hypnotic grooves will rock our little basement into the early hours of Saturday morning, guaranteed. Sascha has recently remixed the new Hudd Traxx release “No Shame” by our own Eddie Leader & San Fran’s finest HectorMoralez. Get down early for the chance to bag yourself a free promo!

About Sascha Dive.....

Long before he turned 18 years old, he was deeply thrilled by the tapes his brother brought back home. He wanted to learn everything about this exciting music and hot nights out in clubs and at parties, for example Omen, XS, Wild Pitch Club or Robert-Johnson or DJs such as Ricardo Villalobos. And finally, Sascha Dive made his way into the coordinate system of Motor City in a more or less roundabout way. Records from Moodymann, Theo Parrish and Cie. telling stories about snoddy soul, flaky disco or shaking samplers are as inspiring to him as the dry funk and the abstract sounds from U.K. artists such as Baby Ford or Thomas Melchior. The inventive joint between these two styles can be found in Sascha's highly appreciated productions. Not to mention that he runs his label Deep Vibes Recordings all by himself and in a very characteristic style when it comes to artwork, A&R, remixes and productions. Moreover, he can look back on a number of extremely successful remixes and tracks released on labels such as Traum or Raum...musik and Drumpoet Community. Dive soon became famous for his first-class, deep house sounds with references to Scott Ferugson or master Tony Rodriguez aka Brothers Vibe.
